Applied sociology is a branch of sociology that deals with scientific examination of the entire society. The people who work under this are faced with the major task of transforming, making better or improving the existing social life state. Applied sociology requires these professionals to exercise the principles that they have learnt in school regarding sociology in the real life situations. This may be in government projects, private companies or in the non-governmental organizations that are not profit oriented. The tasks may vary from promotion of welfare and health of the less fortunate members of the community or the old, assisting the law enforcement teams in ensuring that rehabilitation programs for people implicated in crimes are successful, making preparations for natural calamities, and enhancement of government programs and policies. Considering the above undertakings it is evident that my volunteering in the nursing home qualified to be an applied sociology.
