As information management permeates nursing practice, educational curricula, and nursing science, the profession of nursing is being challenged to balance the need for understanding “meaningful use” of data and the need to provide cost-effective and efficient patient care. In its report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) (2010) emphasizes the importance of nurses being a part of the selection, implementation, and execution of technology solutions for patient care in the twenty-first century.
